GED officially stands for General Educational Development, but is commonly assumed to mean General Equivalency Diploma or General Education Diploma. It is a group of five subject based tests. Taking and passing the tests allows the American or Canadian candidate to be granted a GED credential, often referred to as a diploma, which is widely treated as equivalent to graduating from high school. Since the test is never given by mail or online, taking it requires going to one of the many GED Testing Sites.

The GED program as a whole is administered by the American Council on Education (ACE). Every state and province sets its own policy on prerequisites for the testing and the passing scores. Local testing centers manage the actual test taking. The overall policy information can be found on the ACE web site.

GED Testing Centers can also be located by visiting the ACE website. For your specific state, you can also consult your Department of Education or adult education programs. In the US and Canada there are several thousand testing centers located in virtually every metropolitan area.

If you are located outside of the United States and Canada, you may still be able to take the GED tests. The testing company Prometric, authorized by the Main Department of Education, can give you the GED tests at one of their thousands of testing centers in most countries. If you pass, you will receive a Main High School Equivalency Diploma.

Students with documented disabilities may be eligible for accommodations in the testing process. The disability must have been documented by a qualified professional. A wide range of accommodations are possible, from braille or large print versions of the test to extended testing time. This should be worked out through the testing center to be used.

It is a good idea to do some work to prepare for taking the GED tests. Many states have official GED preparation help available. The ACE web site has a listing of the official preparation facilities by state. Other facilities may be able to help as well. Some are free, but many are not.

There are 5 GED tests. Candidates must take all of them. The criterion for passing is different in different states. With a minimum score of 200 and a maximum of 800, a typical passing requirement would be to have a minimum score of 410 on each test and an average score over all tests of 450.

Passing the GED is supposed to be about as hard as graduating from high school. There are some indications that it may actually be harder. It is mostly treated as a valid substitute for a high school diploma.
